Cross Tattoos

Cross tattoos are among the most common tattoos across the world. With obvious religious connotations, there can be a wide range of symbolism with cross tattoos, with most of the associations tracing back to Christianity in some form. Since Christianity exists across the globe in the modern world, many different styles of crosses and cross tattoos have been created. Depending on where in the world the design originated, the tattoo may posses design characteristics of a different country. If you are interested in cross tattoos, but are unsure about what the different kinds and styles are, some of the more popular types of cross tattoos include:

Christian Cross Tattoos

Christian cross tattoos are the most popular style of cross tattoos. While all cross tattoos usually represent Christianity in some form, there are a few defining characteristics that separate Christian cross tattoos from other varieties. First of all, the most common types of Christian cross tattoos usually include a cross that is made from wood, and usually looks very similar to the classic depictions of the cross that Christ was crucified on. Common designs include crosses that are surrounded by thorns, crosses that are entangles in vines, and crosses that actually depict the crucifixion of Jesus.

Celtic Cross Tattoos

Celtic designs are generally identified by a number of overlapping, or interweaving threads or lines. Many describe Celtic symbols to resemble knots. These tattoos are generally much more complex than the other cross designs, and may feature some very intricate designs and features. Sometimes Celtic crosses will also include additional designs alongside the design of the cross and interweaving lines itself. The Celtic style refers to the designs that were commonly created in medieval Ireland. Often times Celtic cross tattoos will feature the outline of a cross, with the inside of the cross featuring intricately weaved lines that may be symmetric on either side of the cross. Celtic tattoos are less likely to include the depiction of Jesus’ crucifixion.

All cross tattoos in one way or another connect back to Christianity. The cross is, after all, the divine symbol of all Christians. There are many different designs that are commonly used for cross tattoos, and depending on the intricacy of the design cross tattoos generally fit just about anywhere on the body. Common areas of the body for cross tattoo designs include the chest, shoulder, back, forearm and leg.

Celtic Tattoos

Celtic tattoos are among the most popular types of tattoos in the modern world. They are renowned for their intricate designs while keeping a certain simplicity about the tattoo. There are a large number of different designs that are common to Celtic style tattoos. It is a common assumption that the vast majority of Celtic tattoos are simply just designs and have no real association with any concepts. This could not be farther from the truth. While they may appear to be ‘just designs’ on the surface, there is quite a lot of history behind the meanings and associations of the different designs commonly contained within Celtic tattoos.

Celtic designs are often described as a series of very complex interlaced lines. These lines can represent a number of different items. Some of them represent knots, while others may represent mazes. Still others may even represent far more complicated figures such as mythical or divine beings.

The Celtic style tattoos are heavily influenced by the woodwork, stonework and drawings that were done in previous centuries. If you have been considering getting a Celtic tattoo but are unsure about what the more popular Celtic tattoo styles are, you may want to consider the following:

  • Celtic Cross Tattoos – they have religious association, and have been one of the more popular designs in Celtic art for hundreds of years. Read about their meaning here.
  • Celtic Knot Tattoos – they are described this way because of the way that the lines overlap and intersect. This can give the tattoo design the look of a knot. You can read more about them here.

There are many different kinds of Celtic tattoos. However, almost all Celtic tattoos share at least one defining feature in common. They all are usually made from a series of interwoven lines that give the Celtic designs their famed intricacy. This, is the defining feature of every Celtic tattoo and Celtic design. Keep in mind that these designs may take quite some time for even the most experienced tattoo artists to complete, so you may want to choose an area of the body that is resistant to the pain of inking a tattoo.
